Job Shopping

It’s that time of year again. Americans are spending millions, even this year, on the pursuit of holiday happiness. I know, right? With a decided goal (Little Sadie’s thrilled smile as she rips the paper off another package), and a time deadline (on or around December 25th for many shoppers), what can be accomplished is amazing.

People everywhere are making lists, asking personal questions of their friends and loved ones (Favorite color? Still a size six?), clipping coupons, battling terrific snows and terrible crowds and waiting in endless lines just to wrap up a memorable holiday. If anyone put the same effort into a job search, America would be back at work by New Year’s Eve.

Job seekers today need to be saavy shoppers, and sophisticated project managers. Most people already know what has to be done, and how to do it. Looking at the holiday model tells everything:

1. Set a goal: write it down and carry it with you. Your goal should include the job you want most, and a backup or alternate that you would settle for. It should be specific and unique to your situation. Write it down.

2. Create a timeline and a deadline. Know when you want to start your next assignment. “Yesterday” is not an acceptable deadline. Be realistic, but don’t go out too far. If you know that your unemployment benefits end in May, then an April 30th date would be appropriate. Remember, this is the day you will start working; not the day you’ll start looking.

3. Make a list of target companies, along with lists of who works at each one, and who they might know there. Stay close to these helpful elves and make sure they understand your skills and abilities. Does everyone know you are looking? Does everyone know what you do?

4. Get personal with family and friends. Ask for what you want: names. Ask, Whom do you know within this company or within the industry where I want to work. Ask, Do you know anyone I should be talking to about finding new work?

5. Research. Learn everything you can about companies and job descriptions and your own abilities. You want to be well-prepared when the doors open for an interview.
Job seeking crowds can be fierce. Be determined to get what you want; be willing to sweat and maneuver a little to reach your goals. With a plan in hand, what you wrap up this holiday season just might be your job search.
